Manic Thoughts for a Manic Monday – Moving Mountains with Spoons

Mountains and Glass This past Saturday the 14th brought The Glass back to the stage to honor and perform the music of Soda Stereo, the great Argentinean rock group that has influenced more bands than anyone realizes.  But more important than it being another performance by one of Houston’s best bands sharing a bill with other fantastic artists, was the reason for their gathering. It was a benefit show raising funds to help reunite families that have been separated at border crossings. As a friend put it, the evening was “our chance, however small it is, to try to move toward dignity and justice.” TheyRead More →

The Sticks! So a few months back a friend of mine turned me on to Mother Mother and I’ve written at and spoken at length of my obsession. Well, it seems to have bled over to my 3-year old son Young Master Oliver. No less than a dozen times yesterday alone did I hear “DAD! I want to hear THE STICKS!!!!” And so, as any loving and accommodating father would, call out “Alexa, play the Sticks by Mother Mother.” As soon as the drums come in, Oliver starts stomping his feet and bobbing his head and when we get to the “cause they’re ain’t noRead More →

Man it’s hot. Seriously, this is bad. I can’t live like this. The “heat index” had us dancing around 108 over the weekend. 108! By comparison, Seattle is endured a high of 72 and will suffer through a week that will see the thermometer hover around 68. On the bright side there are a bunch of fantastic shows coming up. First up MIEARS has a pair of shows to wrap up a month that has seen her take her unique sound to New York and back. June 29th will find her in Austin at Cheer Up Charlies for a bill that also features Memory Keepers,Read More →

Manic Thoughts for Another Manic Monday

I’m picking up Good Vibrations…. So let’s think of classic, enduring, compelling songs from the rock or pop canon. What comes to mind? “A Day in the Life” by the Beatles is certainly on anyone’s list as would be “the Abbey Road Medley.” Certainly “Bohemian Rhapsody” is heralded for the complex arrangement, ambitious production, and we’ve all heard the legend of there being so many overdubs that the tape became so thin in parts that they could see through it. We can go on with tracks like “Stairway to Heaven” or “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin and so forth. There’s one song thought that I seldomRead More →

Manic Mondays Manic Thoughts – Tuesday Edition

So I thought it would be a fun exercise to make a list of “My Beatles Songs”. You know…the songs that really mean something to me, whether because of the lyric or because the song was linked to a specific moment or feeling in time but I gave up a few minutes into the process when by the time Rubber Soul came along I had listed about 90% of preceding albums’ tracks and then instead of just listing songs from Rubber Soul and Revolver I just wrote the album titles. haha No matter how far I stray into more “modern” artists I always come backRead More →

Manic Monday – quick thoughts for the week

I’m not sure it will be a weekly thing but I’ve decided to start putting pen to paper about all the things that pop in my head throughout a given week that maybe aren’t fleshed out enough for a full article but that I believe are worth mentioning. I’ll throw out upcoming shows or give head’s up on new album releases or just random musings from the Cathedral.  Here we go…. Fake Believe – All This Waiting David Elbert, also of the Glass and the Apple Scruffs, heads up Fake Believe and released their new record, All This Waiting, a few months back. This recordRead More →

Hello….how are you? Have you been alright?

Wow…what a few months. If it seems like I’ve been away or like things have been quiet it’s because things have been more than a little busy…tumultuous even. Quick rundown: I had a brief health scare that turned out to be nothing I can’t manage, nothing tooo serious. I quit smoking, and I hurt my back (again). I’ve been drowning in school work, but the end is in sight to the point that I was able to take part in commencement. I even got to visit New Hampshire to visit the university campus. It was awesome! I have to say, the Irish pub there inRead More →

Strange Days Indeed – thoughts on Ian Moore’s latest album

2017-03-09

Ian Moore has never been afraid to follow his muse wherever it leads him, even at the risk of leaving others bewildered by their inability to neatly paint him within the lines or the confines of traditional genres. Many struggle to define what he’s “supposed to be” but he’s never been one to let others tell him who he is. A Little Background My introduction to Ian Moore came when my friend David Elbert, of Houston’s The Glass and Fake Believe, announced with rabid enthusiasm that we had to make a trip to the record store to get the new album. That album was IanRead More →

What’s going on?

So things have been quiet in the Cathedral from a musical perspective. I’ve barely picked up a guitar, much less recorded anything in far too long but that hardly means my life has been that uneventful. That in mind, I thought it would be important to bring folks up to speed because there’s a lot going on with me as well as with our beloved music community. So let’s start there! First off, I think the biggest thing going on right now is the work that Matthew Davis Buehrer of Yawp Records is doing in the community with Rock 4 Recovery. If you haven’t heard,Read More →

Q&A with Houston’s Own – David Elbert

David Elbert is one of Houston’s most talented guitarists and songwriters. I know this to be true because I’ve had the honor of calling him a best friend for over 20 years. We cut our teeth together and some of my fondest memories, musical or otherwise, include him. I humbly present to you Cathedral Records’ newest Q&A session with a dear friend of the Cathedral and one heck of a guitarist – David Freaking Elbert. You’ve been playing music for most of your life at this point. Tell me about how and why you started playing? I grew up in a very musical family. MyRead More →
